Free cloud doesn't exist: who really pays?
By the Archibou Team
“Free”, “unlimited”, “15 GB included”… Online storage services have a generous vocabulary. Yet in the digital world, as elsewhere, one rule never fails: nobody works for free. Someone, somewhere, always ends up paying. The question is who, and with what.
Nothing is free, everything is paid for
A storage service is above all made of very real costs: servers, electricity, data centers, employees, maintenance. These costs do not disappear just because a price tag reads “€0”.
When a service appears free, payment goes through another door. And that door, most often, is your data.
The three ways you pay
1. With your data. This is the historic business model of the big platforms: the service does not sell you anything. It sells you. Your photos, your documents, your habits become the raw material of targeted advertising. Your “free” is funded by the exploitation of what you entrust to it. The price has not disappeared; it is simply invisible.
2. With the quality of your files. Some “free” services do not charge you in euros, but in degradation: your photos are compressed, reduced, re-encoded to cost less on their servers. You leave with lighter memories, and the service saves money. You have paid, just in the quality of what belongs to you.
3. With your dependence. A trial offer, storage space that runs out, features locked behind a subscription: “free” is often a doorway. The more you store, the harder it becomes to leave. When it is time to choose, the exit has a price, a technical one, not always displayed in euros.
What “free” changes for you
Nothing forces you to pay for a cloud service. But it is important to know what you pay, even when nothing is invoiced:
- Who really funds the service? If the answer is “advertising”, your data is most likely the currency.
- What happens to the quality of my files? Automatic compression is a technical decision that is not yours.
- Can I leave freely? Simple, complete export is the best sign of a healthy service.
- What is the real model? A service can be honest and paid: paying for a service is also paying for your freedom.
A transparent service tells you clearly what it does with your data and what its long-term survival really costs. That is not a luxury; it is the basis of an informed decision.
Our choice
At Archibou, the model is simple and fully owned: a clear price, hosting in France, no advertising, no analysis of your files, no hidden compression. If a service costs you nothing, ask yourself: who pays, and with what?
