What is open source, and why it matters for your data

We trust an app with our photos, our contracts, sometimes our medical records. Yet we rarely stop to ask what is really hidden behind the icon: is the software open, or is it a black box? The answer changes what happens to your data.
The principle
Open source software is software whose source code (the instructions that make a program work) is accessible to everyone. Anyone can read it, check it, modify it and redistribute it. A so-called closed source software, by contrast, keeps its internal workings secret: only its publisher knows exactly what it does.
This transparency is not a technical detail. It sits at the very heart of digital trust.
Why it matters for your data
Everything rests on a simple truth: you can only control what you can see.
1. Real transparency. With open code, what a piece of software does can be examined. A tool that handles your documents or your photos can be audited by independent experts: does it collect data? Does it send it to third parties? Nothing stays hidden inside a black box.
2. Fewer blind spots. Closed source code does not prove that a piece of software does something wrong. But it makes verification from the outside impossible. Open source, on the other hand, gives a large community the tools to inspect the code, report flaws and fix them. Mistakes and questionable behaviour become far easier to spot.
3. No lock-in. Open source software can be taken over, relaunched and developed further, even if its original publisher disappears. You are not trapped by a single provider you depend on without being able to check how it works.
You probably already use open source without knowing it: the Linux systems that power most servers, the VLC video player, the Nextcloud suite, or many web browsers. Reliable tools designed and audited by thousands of people.

For your sensitive data such as work documents, family photos, medical records, choosing the right software is a decision of substance, not a detail.
A few useful questions to ask of any service:
- Is the code open? This is the foundation of transparency.
- Who hosts it, and under which jurisdiction? Open source does not remove the question of where your data lives and which law applies.
- Am I free to leave? Open formats, data export, no lock-in.
- Are my data analysed? Whether or not automatic scanning takes place is a decisive criterion.
